RE: THE BASICS – How to Select the Best Business Management Software Application

Thanks for writing this - the "openness" question is something I see customers bamboozled with all the time. If only they had to look at some of these zillion-table databases, and realize that it can cost tens of thousands of dollars to write something that can extract all of their priceless data in a meaningful way - and if they don't, they're stuck with whatever proprietary or weird vendor-specific tools they can get from the company, and helpless to their support levels (or lack thereof) and depending upon them for training. I always ask "What industry-standard formats can it be exported in?" and if a company can't answer that question (unless they're the industry standard!) then they are SOL. This also ties into partnership wrt not reinventing the wheel.

Jas

------------------------------------

Author and Consultant

The SMB Software Blog

(Mygrant also, please!)

We also have csv price files from both (they appear under the NAGS net price warning function in Glasspac) and it has saved us a ton of money to always know which supplier is cheaper for a part, but online ordering would be sweet. I know we could always type that into the Pilkington website, but why not just quick link from the glasspac screen that has the parts already.

Quick Ordering through Glasspac would be a huge timesaver for us as well as for Pilkington (I would think).

Their reluctance might be a fear that you would share price data with the PGW Auto Glass affiliate company.

It is a quick, easy way to check availability & pricing and place the actual order. I highly recommend using it. As for adding Pilkington, I have asked my sales rep and the warehouse manager on more than one occasion about the possibility and have always gotten the same answer.....No, because of the GTS / PGW connection. It is an inconvenience to log in to their website to shop and compare, so I hope they change their thinking soon.
